Wednesday, August 31, 2022 – Vasser Sullivan driver Frankie Montecalvo finished fourth in class at the Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway.
Montecalvo qualified the No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 eighth in class in some of the hottest qualifying conditions the team had seen all season. When the green flag flew, he had a clean start and worked his way up to second in class before handing the car over to co-driver Aaron Telitz.
“It was great to be back at VIRginia International Raceway for the Michelin GT Challenge. There’s always a huge fan turnout, and this year was no exception,” said Montecalvo.
“It was an incredibly hot weekend which make the track conditions a little tricky, but I was able to qualify our Lexus P8 in class. At the start of the race, I maintained my position and was able to pick off a few cars during my stint. I made it up to P2 in class before handing the car over to Aaron.”
“Aaron did a great job and ran consistent laps all the way to the checkered. He led a few laps and in the final half hour of the race, we thought we had a great shot at a podium finish. We had to duck into the pits with twenty minutes remaining for a splash of fuel to get us to the end, and then Aaron was hunting down that third position.”
“The end of the race was a nail biter, but we ultimately finished P4 in class. Aaron and the entire Vasser Sullivan and Lexus Racing team did a phenomenal job all weekend long. The crew was flawless in the pits and on the stand, and I think we should be in a really good position rolling into Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for the final race of the season next month.”
The last round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Saturday, October 1. To stay up to date with current broadcast times and all of Frankie’s racing news, be sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.
