Montecalvo Hoping to Close Gap in GTD Championship

Thursday, August 23, 2023 – Highlands, NJ  Vasser Sullivan drivers Frankie Montecalvo and Aaron Telitz are ready to take on the 3.27-mile, 17-turn circuit that is VIRginia International Raceway.

With only three races remaining, Montecalvo and Telitz sit only eleven points behind third place in the GTD championship and are hopeful to close the gap to the teams ahead of them this weekend.

“It’s always great getting back to VIR. This is another one of those tracks that used the topography of the land to make a really exciting track to drive,” said Montecalvo.

“VIR has elevation, technical corners, and it’s another high-speed track that should suit our Lexus RC F GT3 well. We always seem to have a fast car here, but for whatever reason, luck doesn’t fall our way. I’ve never had a podium at VIR, so I’m definitely looking to change that this weekend.”

The Michelin GT Challenge at VIR is the final GT-only race of the IMSA Weathertech season, with only the GTD and GTD Pro classes competing in the two hours and forty minutes competition.

“This is the final GT only race of the year, and it’s an event on the calendar that we look forward to every year. We only have three races remaining on the 2023 schedule, so now, every point matters. We’re fourth in the championship, and while the BMW in first has a solid gap to second, we are still in the hunt. If the BMW has a bad race or two, that will change the outlook entirely.”

“I know the Vasser Sullivan team will have our car set up and ready to go when we hit the track for practice one on Friday. Aaron and I will be giving it everything we have to score points for pole and to take home as many as possible in the race and make our way back into the top three of the championship battle.”

On track action for Montecalvo begins Friday, August 25 and continues through the weekend. The green flag flies for the Michelin GT Challenge at 2:10 PM ET. You can watch Frankie race live with coverage beginning at 2:00 PM ET on USA Network. Be sure to follow Frankie on Facebookand Twitter to stay up to date with all of his racing news.
